A lot of people own a watch. These are not uncommon in the world we live. However, what exactly is a survival watch? Is it just like any other?

Survival watches are much different than a Rolex. These watches do much more than just tell the time.

First of all, they are waterproof to 100m and beyond. This is key if you are going to survive outdoors in the wilderness.

Survival watches like Suunto also come with lots of goodies to help you survive. They have an altimeter and barometer built in. They come with a compass. Some of them even come with a GPS device built in.

Just having a watch and knowing the time is not enough if you are in survival mode. A real survival watch will really come in handy if you’re trying to navigate rough terrain or find your way around.

Be sure to include a survival watch in your survival kit.

In the world of emergency preparedness, we are constantly bombarded with this food storage, that disaster kit, this emergency supply, or whatever. All of it serves the purpose of making sure our homes and families are ready for any emergency. But what if disaster strikes and you are not home?

The average person spends 7 hours asleep and 9 hours at work. That leaves 8 hours of time at home or any leisurely place. If you spend 9 hours each day away from home, that’s about 1/3 of every day. If you figure that in to a week, it’s about 45 hours of 168 hours in a week. That’s 25% of your time. And that’s only assuming you spend the rest of your time at home, not out at the movies, shopping at the grocery store or running any number of errands.

If you think about it, that gives you a one in four chance of not being home if a disaster strikes. You can spend all the time in the world stocking up food and supplies at home, but if you can’t get to them for an extended period of time, what do you do?

That’s why it is so important to not forget an emergency kit for your car. It doesn’t have to be much. You probably only need a week or a few days worth of food. You may want other supplies like a blanket, radio and flashlight.

Food Insurance actually has something perfect called the Emergency Plus Kit. It comes with two weeks worth of food and a host of other supplies for an emergency. This works really well to put in the trunk of your car just in case something happens and you aren’t home or can’t get home for a little while.

So don’t forget, you need food storage in your car and not just your home. Disasters and emergencies don’t wait to strike when it is convenient for you. They can happen at any time. Be prepared no matter where you are.

Recently, another massive hurricane rocked the United States. This time it hit the Atlantic coast and went up in to the New England area. By now most of us are familiar with Hurricane Irene because of the extensive news coverage.

But how familiar are we with the aftermath? Many people are still without power. Many roads are still flooded and ruined. Many people in rural areas are somewhat stranded and unable to get out of their homes for essential items.

How long are people going to depend on FEMA or the government to come and rescue them in an emergency? Could you wait until supplies were air dropped to you in an emergency?

The most essential items for us are food and water, and yet so few have stored very much of either. They don’t think disaster can strike them. People in New York probably never counted on a hurricane. I bet they wish they had been prepared now, don’t you?

Being prepared is so simple. There are so many reputable food storage companies today that you can get adequate food storage from just about anywhere. And some go beyond that.

You can actually go to Food Insurance and get all kinds of emergency supplies, including water filters, emergency backpacks and more. It’s not a bad idea to have more than just food stored. It’s a great idea to have other essentials like what come in the emergency disaster kits from Food Insurance.

If Hurricane Irene has taught us anything it’s that anything can happen at any time. We had best be prepared for whatever can come our way by storing enough food and water to survive.

Many of you on the East coast are very aware of Irene, a huge storm about to hit North Carolina. Many people are being forced to evacuate to coastal areas. Others will probably see some property destruction, power outages and more. So why is it that food storage is considered an “end of the world” type of thing? You should have food storage in case of hurricanes or any other disaster.

Think about Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans got devastated. Many people died and others relied on the government for help to survive. What if they had two week food kits they could have grabbed when they evacuated? That would have made their lives a whole lot better.

Recently an earthquake hit the East coast as well. It wasn’t big enough to cause the type of damage we saw in Japan, but that doesn’t mean a big one couldn’t hit. What if all the power went out? What if the streets were closed? What if it happened in winter and there was snow blocking you in? There are any number of emergencies that would require you to survive for days or maybe even weeks. Food storage is necessary for surviving any long term emergency.

Ready America has some guidelines on making yourself a kit with food and other essentials in case of an emergency. And that means any emergency. You just never know what’s coming, so in case there is a fire, flood, earthquake, hurricane or “end of the world” type scenario, you will want to be ready with food and water to survive.

If you don’t have any food storage, consider browsing our reviews of various food storage companies. You can compare ratings and see which food storage solution is going to be right for you. I highly advise finding the best food storage brand for your needs and getting an adequate amount of emergency food supplies. You should also have a large supply of water storage as well.

Remember, a disaster can strike at any time. You never know what kind of emergency you may have to face suddenly. Be prepared for any emergency with a large supply of food storage. You’ll be glad you did.

The internet is a great resource when you are developing your own food storage unit. When you have question or even when you are having trouble deciding which food you should buy and store, you can search online for what other people have said. There are a ton of different forums that enable readers to review all of the material that has been offered up for that website. As you are reviewing the different comments and advice that have been giving you should be sure that you are wise about what information you take in.

You want to make sure that you look for trends in the reviews. Just because one person believed that something worked fabulously or did not work at all, their opinion is not truth. Make sure that you look through enough reviews to find a general trend in what is being said about a product, an idea or even a food item.

With the help of reviews, you may be able to find products that you were not even aware existed. As you are looking through the products do not be afraid to be open to these products that you were not aware of before. When you find that reviews are consistently negative about a product that you were considering, do not be afraid to look elsewhere!

Looking at some one’s fully developed food storage unit when you are first starting to develop your own food storage can be wholly overwhelming. Do not get discouraged when this happens, but instead take note of different techniques and organization tools that the individual has been using in his or her food storage pantry.

Learning from more seasoned food storage units is a great way to plan for your own food storage. The best way to be successful with a food storage unit is to have a plan for what you are wanting to store and how you are going to be sure that you can ascertain it and store it properly in your home.

While you are creating your plan be sure that you are bringing foods home that you know you can cook with and incorporate into meals. This way, your family is not stuck eating only ten pounds of sunflower seeds simply because you thought sunflower seeds would be a great item to store. Keep in mind that your goal is to be able to feed your family. Planning the food that you buy around a well balanced meal is the best way to ensure that you are able to accomplish this goal.

Many people think that to have an appropriate food storage unit they have to be able to dedicate a whole pantry or a whole closet to their food storage. This is not the case and you want to be sure to understand that even if you do not have a lot of space, you can start developing a food storage unit that you could use to feed your family.

First, you have to make sure that the area that you are storing your food is dry. You do not want a lot of humidity seeping into the area that you are storing food. You should be sure that you attempt to find a dryer area of your home if you live in a very humid climate. For some people, this may mean in a closet in their basement and for others it may mean under the bed.

Second, you want to be sure that the temperature is not going to fluctuate too much in the area that you are storing the food. Keeping the temperature cool will ensure that the food will last as long as it is supposed to. As the temperature fluctuates you increase the chances that the food that you are storing will go bad.

Your food storage unit does not have to be big and fancy. Slowly but surely you can start building your food storage unit wherever you can in your home.

There are not a lot of people that remember to store their pet food in the food storage unit. But, if you were to have to support your family from only the food in your food storage unit, it would be horribly sad to not have food for your pet. There are many different ways that you can store your pet’s food in your food storage unit.

When you are storing food for a pet you want to be sure that it is isolated from the other foods in your food storage. You do not want your dog food to make your storage unit smelly and you definitely do not want the taste of the food to seep into other foods in your food storage unit.

Storing the pet food in a thick plastic container is a great way to ensure that it will stay fresh but it will also not contaminate the other food in your food storage unit. You can also tape a plastic cup on the side of the plastic tub to ensure that you have a way to get the food out of the plastic container without touching it with your hands.

As you develop your food storage unit, remember to purchase food for your animals as well as your family members.
